Nanny Share Placement

Shared care, thoughtfully organized.

A nanny share allows two families to hire one nanny together, creating a more personalized childcare experience while sharing the overall cost of care.

For many families, it can be a great middle ground between private nanny care and group childcare. At Household Hive, we help families navigate the details that make nanny shares work: schedule alignment, host home expectations, pay structure, duties, communication, backup care, and the relationship between both families and the nanny.
A strong nanny share is not just about finding another family and splitting costs. It works best when everyone is clear, aligned, and realistic from the beginning.

Common Newborn Care Specialist Arrangements

A nanny share is an arrangement in which two families share a nanny to care for children from both households. Care may take place in one family’s home, rotate between homes, or follow another structure agreed upon by all parties.
Nanny shares can offer the consistency and personalization of nanny care while allowing families to share expenses. They can also give children built-in social interaction with another child or sibling group in a smaller, home-based setting.
Because more people are involved, nanny shares require extra communication, planning, and clarity. The best arrangements are built on aligned expectations before the role begins.

Nanny shares can work beautifully, but they are not the right fit for every family. Household Hive can help you decide whether a nanny share makes sense for your schedule, budget, child’s needs, and household expectations.

What Families Need to Agree On

A nanny share works best when both families are aligned before the search begins. Household Hive can help families talk through the important details, including:
A nanny share should feel like a partnership. The clearer the arrangement is upfront, the easier it is for everyone to move forward with confidence.

Host Home and Daily Logistics

One of the biggest decisions in a nanny share is where the care will take place. Some families choose a single consistent host home, while others rotate among homes based on schedules, space, and convenience.
Families should think through practical details such as:
These details may seem small, but they can make a big difference in how smoothly the share runs day to day.

Nanny Share Agreements

A nanny share usually needs more structure than a single-family nanny role. In addition to the nanny’s work agreement, both families should be clear about their shared expectations. Household Hive can help families think through:
The goal is to prevent confusion before it happens, not after everyone is already frustrated.

Is a Nanny Share Right for Your Family?

A nanny share may be a great fit if your family is flexible, communicative, and comfortable working closely with another household. It is especially helpful for families who want personalized childcare, but also want to share the cost and create a small social environment for their child.
A nanny share may be more challenging if your family has a highly unpredictable schedule, very specific household preferences, frequent last-minute changes, or expectations that are hard to align with another family.
During your consultation, Household Hive can help you decide whether a nanny share is the right path or whether a private long-term nanny placement may be a better fit.

How Household Hive Helps

Hiring a long-term nanny can feel overwhelming, especially when families are trying to compare candidates, understand pay standards, check references, coordinate interviews, and create a work agreement.
Household Hive helps by learning your family’s needs, shaping the role, creating a clear job profile, introducing selected candidates, supporting interviews, helping with trial period expectations, and offering guidance as you move toward a final agreement.
We are available throughout the process to answer questions, discuss options, and help families make informed decisions without feeling they are managing the search alone.

Candidate Standards

All Household Hive candidates are reviewed through our standard vetting process before being considered for placement. To learn more about experience expectations, references, certifications, and screening, visit our Candidate Requirements page.

Pay and Employment Structure

Nanny shares are not typically priced as “half of a nanny.” A nanny caring for children from two families is taking on a more complex role, so share rates are usually higher than a single-family nanny rate.
A common structure is for each family to pay around two-thirds of the nanny’s individual rate, creating a combined hourly rate that fairly reflects the added responsibility of caring for children from multiple households.
“For example, if a nanny’s single-family rate is $30/hour, each family might pay around $20/hour, creating a combined rate of $40/hour for the nanny.”

Expected Combined Rate

Household Hive generally expects

$40–$50+/hr
The final rate may vary depending on the number of children, schedule, duties, location, driving expectations, benefits, and the nanny’s experience.

Because two families are involved, legal payroll, guaranteed hours, paid time off, sick time, and written agreements are especially important.

Each family should understand their share of wages, taxes, benefits, schedule changes, and what happens if one family leaves the arrangement.
